Questions

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Play the song and tap the big button (or press Space) on every beat. After four taps the counter shows the tempo, and it gets more accurate the longer you tap. Tap on the kick drum or the snare backbeat, wherever the pulse feels strongest.

How accurate is tap tempo?

The counter averages your last 16 taps, so small timing slips cancel out. Tapping steadily for 8 to 10 seconds usually lands within 1 BPM of the true tempo. If the number keeps drifting, the song may have a live drummer whose tempo actually moves.

Why does the counter show half or double the tempo I expected?

You are probably tapping every other beat, or tapping eighth notes. A song at 140 BPM tapped on beats 2 and 4 reads 70. Both are valid; genres such as hip-hop and drum and bass are often felt at half time.

How do I convert BPM to milliseconds?

One beat (a quarter note) lasts 60,000 ÷ BPM milliseconds, so at 120 BPM a quarter note is 500 ms and an eighth note is 250 ms. The table under the counter lists straight, dotted and triplet lengths for setting delay and reverb times.
